How to Choose Silicon Carbide Powder

Taoxia

Choosing the right silicon carbide (SiC) powder depends on several factors, including its intended application, purity, grain size, and cost. Here’s a guide to help you make an informed decision:

1. Determine the Application

Silicon carbide powder is used in various industries, so your application will dictate the required specifications:

Abrasives (grinding wheels, sandpaper, lapping compounds) → Medium to fine grain, high hardness

Ceramics & Refractories (kiln furniture, crucibles) → High-purity SiC with larger grains

Metallurgy (deoxidizing agent in steelmaking) → Lower-purity SiC may be acceptable

Electronics (semiconductors, LEDs) → Ultra-high purity with controlled grain size

2. Check Purity Levels

Silicon carbide comes in different purity grades, usually ranging from 90% to 99.9% SiC content.

Metallurgical grade (90-95%) → Suitable for steelmaking and non-critical applications

Refractory grade (97-99%) → Ideal for ceramics and kiln linings

High-purity grade (99.9%+) → Used in semiconductor and electronics industries

3. Consider Particle Size & Distribution

The grain size affects performance, especially in abrasive and ceramic applications:

Coarse (F16-F60) → Ideal for grinding and blasting

Medium (F80-F220) → Used in polishing and fine machining

Fine (<1µm to sub-micron level) → Required for advanced ceramics and semiconductors

4. Assess Chemical & Physical Properties

Look at key properties:

Mohs hardness (9.0-9.5) – Essential for abrasives

Thermal conductivity (~120 W/m·K) – Important for heat dissipation in electronics

Electrical resistivity – Crucial for semiconductor applications

Oxidation resistance – Needed for high-temperature uses

5. Compare Alpha vs. Beta SiC

Alpha-SiC (hexagonal) → Used in structural applications, ceramics, and refractories

Beta-SiC (cubic) → Preferred for electronic and specialized uses

6. Check for Impurities

Impurities like iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), and free carbon (C) can affect performance. Higher purity ensures better mechanical and thermal properties.

7. Supplier & Cost Considerations

Buy from reliable manufacturers to ensure consistency.

Compare costs based on quality, packaging, and bulk orders.

Request material certifications (ISO, ASTM) for assurance.
